About Southwind Bank
Welcome to Southwind Bank, where you experience banking the way it should be!
Here we still believe in personal banking relationships. Our customers are more than just a number; they are our neighbors and friends. For generations, we have worked together with our customers to help our communities grow and prosper.
Our roots go back over one hundred years. Originally known as First National Bank, we opened for business May 1, 1909, in Natoma, Kansas. The bank was formed by local investors with $47,000 and a strong desire to offer the best banking services available in Natoma and surrounding communities.
First National Bank enjoyed great success through the years and in 1991 expanded its territory by opening a second office in Russell, Kansas. This move required a name change and the bank became known as United National Bank.
When the founding bank shareholders formed the institution in 1909 they obtained a national bank charter. Since that time the banking industry has undergone many changes. As a result, in 2013 the shareholders elected to become a state-chartered bank and Southwind Bank was born.
Throughout the past century, the bank has enjoyed continued growth and success. The initial $47,000 in assets has grown to over $120,000,000. But one thing that has not changed over the years is our commitment to providing generations of customers quality banking services with our signature friendly, hometown attitude.
Not only have we served generations of customers with honesty and integrity, we have done so with generations of the same family at the helm. In 1920, E.A. Ruggels was named the active manager of First National Bank, becoming the first generation of the Ruggels family to head the bank. Ninety-four years later, the bank is managed by E.A.'s grandson, Vance Ruggels, who currently serves as President & CEO. Southwind Bank is truly a bank for generations.
